A Year-Round Training Manual to Build Teamwork and Teach Leadership to the High School Athlete.
Coach Stewart has turned around 3 losing programs, leading all to the playoffs. He has won 60 games and never coached a scholarship player. He will be the first to tell you that the most important component to these turnarounds was his offseason team building and leadership program.
TEAM BUILDING: Activities and concepts that are applied year-round, from little things that can be done in the weight room and at school, to team-building camping trips. Team building starts in January and goes thru to playoffs. Topics include
- Student Tree Program,
- Weight Room,
- Camping Trips,
- Community Service,
- Team Dinners,
- Senior Candle Ceremony,
- and much more.
LEADERSHIP: Asking 17 and 18-year-olds to lead is challenging and very tough to ask them to be an extension of the coaching staff, while being a voice for the team. This part of the book is presented as lesson plans which Stewart uses once a week all spring & summer to teach players how to lead. Detailed steps that coaches can undertake to inspire leadership in their players and enable their athletes to experience excitement on a day-to-day basis during the football Stewart shows how he chooses team leaders, communicates expectations to the leaders, how to teach captains to balance “earning respect” with “being liked,” how to create ownership, and how to play to the strengths of your leaders by putting them in positions to be successful.
